Science in Medicine Lecture - Probing the Genome to Understand Susceptibility to Acute Organ Failure and Death in the Critically Ill
2/1/2012 12:00:00 PM - 2/1/2012 1:00:00 PM
Dr. Mark Wurfel, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington, obtained an MD from Cornell University and a Ph.D from the Rockefeller University before coming to the University of Washington for a residency in Internal Medicine followed by a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Wurfel’s laboratory combines genetic epidemiological approaches with in vitro and in vivo model systems to identify and characterize genetic factors altering host susceptibility to acute organ dysfunction and death in the setting of critical illnesses. His talk will focus on how genetic and genomic approaches are being applied to the study of acute lung injury and acute kidney injury to reveal new insights on pathogenesis and risk stratification.
